Distribution in the wild:
Endemic to Turkey, in maquis, Quercus scrub, Pinus woods, calcareous and serpentine rocks from sea level-1000 m.

Flowering in the wild:April-August

bourgaei is in honour of Eugène Bourgaeu (1813-1877).


Differs from P. viscosa Poiret by having narrower bracteoles, a smaller calyx (with longer teeth), by having a smaller denser inflorescence and has less glandular hairs.

Evergreen shrub to 150 cm. Leaves glandular-puberulant, stellate above and densely stellate-tomentose beneath, triangular-ovate to oblong-lanceolate, cordate at base, crenate-serrate at margin, 3-16 × 1.5-6 cm; petiole to 5 cm. Floral leaves triangular-ovate-lanceolate; shortly petiolate. One to two whorls, (6-)12-20 flowered. Bracteoles subulate, densely long hispid-viscid 12-17 × 0.75-1.5 mm, teeth subulate, 3-7 mm. Corolla yellow, 20-30 mm. Nutlets hairless.

Phlomis bourgaei  ‘Whirling Dervish’ 
A selection from the wild with very cockled leaves was introduced by the author.  Hardy to -15°C.

Distribution: Turkey

Differs from P. bourgaei in having bracteoles 2-3 mm wide and no glandular hairs on the calyx teeth.

Differs from P. grandiflora by having glandular hairs on leaves and bracteoles 2-3 mm wide.
