Saxifraga (Ligulatae group)
Mrs Beryl Bland
Brickell Award Winner 2006
Beryl started assembling her collection in 1988; it became a National Plant Collection in 1997 and was awarded scientific status in 1999. In 2000, the Alpine Garden Society published her monograph on ‘Silver Saxifrages’. A key area of Beryl’s research work focused on correct identification and nomenclature. Within her monograph, she introduced ‘The Multi Access Key’, which has received much international praise as a tool to aid correct identification. In 2001, in recognition of her work, she was appointed ISHS Registrar for Silver Saxifrages. Beryl has published widely, in ‘The Alpine Gardener’, ‘The Garden’, and ‘The Plantsman’. Her enthusiasm and erudition in promoting this group of plants has seen her speak nationally and internationally in Europe and North America. She was actively involved with the Royal Horticultural Society’s trial of silver saxifrages between 2000 and 2003.
Beryl has undertaken fieldwork in the Maritime Alps, the Pyrenees, the Dolomites, and Norway. She was an inaugural member of the Saxifrage Society. Saxifraga species and cultivars from her collection have been propagated and widely distributed to UK nurseries and gardeners in an attempt to ensure that ‘correct’ plants are available.
