Project funding

The Threatened Plants Project is a long term, groundbreaking project, the result of years of discussions with the RHS and a lengthy conference entitled Growing Heritage held in 2006. These discussions set about to devise a structure by which we can ultimately define the UK’s rare and threatened cultivated plants and put in place a plan to rescue cultivated plants at risk of extinction. It was agreed unanimously that Plant Heritage (then known as the NCCPG) was in the best position to manage this project, with its resource of the National Plant Collection® scheme and its excellent network connecting individual enthusiasts, experts, specialist societies and horticultural organisations.

The project is generously funded through the following Charitable Trusts and Foundations, we thank them for their support without which this project could not be implemented:

• The Esmée Fairbairn Foundation – have given a three year commitment that supports the Project Coordinator’s salary in  2010, 2011 & 2012.

• The Finnis Scott Foundation – initial seed funding in 2009

HDH Wills 1965 Charitable Trust

• Eranda Foundation

• The Topinambour Trust

• Stanley Smith (UK) Horticultural Trust

In addition, the Vodafone World of Difference Programme 2011 supported the project with a two month paid placement in April and May 2011. Veronika Moore was the ideal candidate to provide assistance, and she remained with Plant Heritage for a further month as an employee. We wish Veronika well with her continued studies and conservation work, she was a real asset to Plant Heritage. If you wish to make an application to volunteer in March- April 2013, please do contact us before submit your application to the VWOD website.

Hozelock is our headline commercial sponsor for 2012.
