Dionaea Muscipula cross tooth
Dionaea in flower
When Charles Darwin called a plant the most wonderful in the world who’d have thought He would be referring to the Venus Flytrap,
One of the wonders of the plant kingdom.
Although there is only one species of Venus Flytrap Dionaea muscipula
There are number of both natural forms and man made cultivars . Some of these are representative of plants growing in the wild .
The Venus flytrap originates from North and south Carolina in the USA
Where they have very limited ranges which are decreasing due to land being drained by developers and naturaly occuring changes to their habitat.
The Venus flytrap is a protected species and is covered by Cities when sold/traded .
The Venus flytrap was taken from the wild in truck loads by wholesalers and by poachers
Now thanks to modern plant propagation methods such as tissue culture the pressure has been taken of the wild plant populations.
The Venus flytrap is easy to grow they enjoy full sun as they are sun worshippers
During spring summer months they need to stand in rain water or reverse osmosis water as tap water will kill the plant due to having too many nutrients and minerals in as the plant comes from impoverished soils and gets all its needs from its prey .
If the plant produces a flower spike Pinch it out so the plant concentrates growing traps , each trap opens and close 3 times in its life time before dying and being replaced by a new one, if the traps are constantly triggered by prodding fingers this will weaken the plant and eventually led to its premature death.
During the winter months the plant needs to go dormant so need to be kept in a cold place
In either unheated greenhouse/ cold garage window sill and keep the soil damp.
Remove any dead growth in order to avoid fungal infection if needed spray with a systemic fungicide.
The plant will either stop or slow its growth down, some plants even lose almost all their leaves.
But will start growing in the spring as the weather warms up.
