VISIT TO ROSELAND HOUSE NURSERY, CHACEWATER, TRURO
By kind permission of Charlie and Liz Pridham
Roseland House is home to over 500 climbing plants, some are rare, like the ‘Three Islands Creeper’, tecomanthe speciosa, others like the many old rambling roses fill the garden with scent and colour in June and give the garden a feeling of enclosure. The one-acre garden is home to two National Collections, the Clematis viticella cultivars and the lapageria collection.
All the various tunnels, greenhouses and the conservatory are open to be explored. The two ponds are home to much wildlife (after the heron, a regular visitor, ate all the fish).
The garden was started in the early 1800s but largely destroyed during the second world war’s ‘Dig for Victory’. It remained unloved until 1983 when the Pridhams arrived and had a blank canvas to play with.
Charlie will give us a conducted tour.
Travel west on the A30. At the Chiverton Cross roundabout take the A390 exit signed Truro. After 1.5 miles turn right at the sign for Chacewater. Roseland Nursery is at the bottom of the hill on the left. Park in the village car park or on the roads. Car sharing is advisable.
Burncoose Nursery is only 4.5 miles away from Roseland House so it would be possible to call there before the afternoon visit.
