chrysophylla means with golden leaves and refers mainly to dried herbarium specimens
although some live material is also yellowish (slightly
khaki).
Evergreen shrub to 1m. Lower
leaf laminas broadly elliptic to oblong-ovate, obtuse to
rounded at apex, truncate or rounded at base to 8.5 × 6
cm; petiole to 5 cm. Floral leaves 2.8-6.8 × 2-5.3 cm, circular
to obovate, petiole to 1.5 cm. One to two whorls, many flowered;
occasionally in pairs when calyces are often stalked to
7 mm. Whorls 6-7 cm across. Bracteoles linear subulate,
ciliate to 12 × 1 mm often in groups of three joined at
base. Calyx to 15 mm; teeth broad and short with a mucro
of 1 to 2 mm. Corolla 28-32 mm, golden yellow. Nutlets
hairless. Hardy to -15°C.
