Azara
microphylla 'Variegata' (Flacourtiaceae family) is laden
with the scent of vanilla at this time of year. A. microphylla
comes from Chile and Argentina and seems quite hardy
here. (With such shrubs I always protect for the first 2 or
3 winters but after that they seem to be able to take anything.)
It is far less susceptible to cold winds than its brother
A. serrata, whose leaves can be blackened at this
time of year in a severe cold windy spell.
