Talk - Edible ornamentals by Stephen Barstow

The author of 'Around the World in 80 Plants: an edible perennial vegetable adventure for temperate climates', lives in near-Arctic Norway and has spent the past 35 years running trials on more than 4,000 vegetables, most of them perennials. Several are common ornamentals – or “edimentals” as he calls them – and it is unlikely that anyone has tried and eaten so many different species of plants.

Talk - Plant nutrition: getting the best the out of your plants by Andrew Gaunt

Andrew discusses soil types, pH and structure, rotations, manures, mulches and cover crops. He will also discuss artificial fertilisers and tell us which are best value for money. From cut flowers to root vegetables, Andrew will discuss the varied strategies needed for different situations.

The Guernsey Plant Heritage group visited this garden earlier this year and highly recommended it. According to the Surrey Life magazine, the garden in Wonersh, near Bramley at on A281, has densely planted borders, different themed areas, including a drought-tolerant and a white and silver garden, makes excellent use of height, has unusual plants and many seats to relax and take in the wonderful views.

Talk: Shere magic - How to manage a vineyard by Alex Valsecchi

The manager of the biodynamic Albury Vineyard in Shere, Alex will talk about how to manage a vineyard (just in case you want to start your own or work for one of the 700 now in the UK) and how she got where she is today. Alex did her Masters in horticulture at the University of Milan in 1996, followed by several years in vineyards in Italy and New Zealand. She joined Albury in 2010.

Japan is fascinating country, with 1 in 3 of the 4,500 species growing only in Japan. Much of the land is mountainous and thus is a rich source of alpine species. He talks about an expedition arranged jointly by RBG Kew and the Alpine Garden Society in which seeds from 450 species were collected. Along the way the group were treated to many of the unique aspects of Japanese life. The talk looks at the state of plant conservation in Japan.
