Launch of 35th Anniversary Rose at Chelsea

In celebration of the charity’s 35th anniversary year, David Austin Roses have a beautiful new Rose to say ‘Happy Birthday Plant Heritage’. Aptly named Rosa ‘The Lady Gardener’, the rose will be launched at Chelsea Flower Show by three female Collection Holders who represent so many of the outstanding ‘Lady Gardeners’ within the charity:

* Jane Lindsay, NCH Passiflora and Jasminum

* Vicky Fox, NCH Heuchera

* Lorraine Birchall, NCH Rhodohypoxis & x Rhodoxis

Speaking on the relationship between Plant Heritage and David Austin Roses, Plant Heritage President, Alan Titchmarsh said he was delighted that David Austin was launching this rose for the charity, which is the first in the English Old Rose Group to have apricot flowers and a strong tea fragrance: “It is always wonderful to see a brand new rose, but even more special when one is launched in support of a charity whose work lies at the heart of conserving our rich plant heritage,” he said.

Shropshire rose breeder David Austin Roses has a long relationship with the charity, holding a National Collection of Rosa (English Roses bred by David Austin) at its world famous rose gardens.

David Austin Rosarian Michael Marriott said he was thrilled to be associated with Plant Heritage. “It is such an important organisation - if it wasn't for Plant Heritage a great many wonderful plants including roses, of course, would be lost forever. We maintain our own National Collection of English Roses here at the David Austin Nursery and by naming our new English Rose, ‘The Lady Gardener’, for Plant Heritage, we hope to raise more awareness about the charity’s invaluable work".

The rose will be launched on the David Austin Rose stand in the Great Pavilion at Chelsea Flower Show on Monday 20th May.
