Plant Heritage is pleased to announce the arrival of its new Chairman, Mike Buffin, who took up the position on 1st September. The current Chairman, Michael Alder steps down after six years with the charity and will remain on the Board.
Mike has been involved with Plant Heritage for over 20 years on a voluntary basis, until recently Chairman of the Plant Conservation Committee. In that role he was responsible for instigating a review of the National Plant Collection® scheme with a view to increasing its membership, and transforming the current Plant Conservation Committee to become more accountable and flexible in its work.
Having worked for the National Trust for the past 10 years, previously as Gardens and Parks Advisor and presently Consultancy Manager, Mike has made a major impact on the National Trust’s Conservation Policy, ensuring it works towards the targets identified by the Global Strategy for Plant Conservation. Prior to working at the National Trust he was Curator at the Sir Harold Hillier Arboretum in Hampshire.
“I am delighted to be taking on the role of Chairman of Plant Heritage,” said Mike. “I believe the current climate surrounding cultivated plant conservation is by far the most favourable for many years, and one that Plant Heritage must play a pivotal and leading role in. Plant Heritage is working on a dynamic strategic vision and a range of stretching targets which will ensure the charity is always evolving at a pace which meets the needs of our membership, and our commitments to plant conservation.”
