New Fit for Growth Project awarded Heritage Lottery Fund support

Plant Heritage is delighted to announce the charity is to receive a £98,816 grant this year from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) for an exciting new project, Fit for Growth.

Led by Plant Heritage staff, volunteers and working with key stakeholders, the two year project will focus on a number of strands designed to strengthen the charity’s future.

The project will explore ways to simplify governance, improve funding through reaching out to a wider audience through digital marketing, and develop options to modernise the IT systems for the charity’s plant conservation and other data. The project will look at developing the charity’s work with the next generation of horticulturists and keen gardeners by developing new ways of communicating the message for the need for cultivated plant conservation.

Plant Heritage (the working name of the National Council for the Conservation of Plants and Gardens) is the leading cultivated plant conservation charity, which works with members and local groups, to safeguard the rich diversity of cultivated plants. The charity runs nationwide schemes such as the National Plant Collections®, Plant Guardians, and the Threatened Plants Project, all set up to help secure the future of the UK’s garden plants.

Commenting on the award, CEO Sarah Quarterman said: “We are thrilled to have received the support of the Heritage Lottery Fund and are confident the project will make a substantial difference to allow us to modernise our approach, increase our supporter base and ultimately make us fit for growth to enhance plant conservation for future generations to come. The work of Plant Heritage is unique and of great importance, as once a garden plant is lost to cultivation, it’s lost forever.”
