Sad death of Mark Flanagan

We were very sad to hear of the recent passing of Mark Flanagan in October, following a short illness. Mark was a talented horticulturist, plant hunter and author. Mark's dedication, energy and enthusiasm for the Royal Landscape at Windsor was well known and it was fitting that Her Majesty the Queen awarded him membership of the Royal Victorian Order on Thursday 24th September 2015, in recognition of his role as Keeper of the Gardens at Windsor Great Park for the last 20 years.

He tended to nine National Plant Collections within the gardens at Windsor Great Park: the Collections of Mahonia and Rhododendron (Glenn Dale Azaleas) held in the Valley Gardens and the Collections of Betula utilis cvs., Betula albosinensis cvs., Hardy Ferns, Magnolia, Prunus incisa and Rhododendron spp. held in both the Savill and the Valley Gardens.

He was also Chairman of the RHS Woody Plant Committee and a Committee Member of the RHS Rhododendron, Camellia and Magnolia Group. A full tribute to Mark will follow in the Spring edition of the Plant Heritage Journal in March.

Our thoughts are with Mark's family and close friends at this sad time.
