Grampian and Tayside is the northernmost Plant Heritage group in the UK, with members from Fife in the south up to Forres in the north and Inverewe and Crarae in the west.
The Group’s year starts in November with the AGM, a hot lunch prepared by the committee and an after lunch speaker. This takes places at various venues in Angus and Perthshire. Given the potential for weather problems in this part of the world over the winter, our next event is our March lecture which usually takes place at the University of Dundee Botanic Garden.
In mid-April, we have a stand at the Scottish National Daffodil festival at Collessie House. It is wonderful opportunity to meet people and to raise awareness of Plant Heritage.
Our big fund raising event, our Plant Sale, happens at the end of April. Members contribute generously and we aim to raise around £1,000. Our intention is to involve our many National Plant Collection holders in the future to our mutual benefit.
We have three days of garden visits in late spring and early summer, again involving our National Plant Collections as far as possible. They usually involve two gardens and the opportunity to eat lunch together. Whilst a lot of serious horticultural chat goes on, there is also some blether and plenty of smiles!
August is spent getting together our stall for the Dundee Flower and Food Festival. We have reached the dizzy heights of a Silver Gilt for our efforts, but annually strive to go one step further! Again an opportunity to meet both horticulturists and those who have strayed into the floral tents almost by accident and find a new world of conservation opening up to them.
Our final event of the year is in mid-September when we make a social visit to a member’s garden for our annual get-together for members and their friends. There is a plant bring-and-buy sale, more home bakes than is probably good for us and plenty of good crack!
